If you’ve ever visited my Facebook or Instagram pages you will know how much I love to share the work of various artists.
Painters, illustrators, storytellers, photographers, writers, musicians, poets and great thinkers and there is a good reason I do this.
I believe there are ways of knowing and understanding the good people apart from actual visual sightings, physical encounters or verbal interaction.
I think we will come to understand them through our intuition, our memories, our ancestral memories, our night dreams and day dreams and… those of others.
Throughout this year, I hope to bring you some of my favourite modern artists, those who offer a genuine, heartfelt and unique perspective of the Good People through their chosen artform.
I wholeheartedly believe that by taking a peek into their creations, their motivation or inspiration, our own understanding of the Good People will be deepened and enriched.
We begin today with one of my favourite authors, Richard McCloskey-Wall. Richard is an Irish author who offers up a wonderfully refreshing depiction of Irish Faerie in his book, ‘Mrs Mulligan’s Mischief of Magpies & other dark Irish Fairy Tales.
The dark, tale Richard shares in this episode was inspired by faerie thorn trees in Richard’s own garden and shows us that when it comes to taking revenge, the good people can be slow and methodical for to achieve their goal.
To celebrate 2 years of our Podcast, I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Patreon. If you enjoy my podcast and videos, please consider becoming a Patron, and supporting me on Patreon.
There are 4 levels or tiers within our Patreon, the first begins at only $3 per month and each level offers additional benefits and content. These range from:
- having your name included in our YouTube videos,
- having access to exclusive Patreon-only videos,
- to receiving handpicked gifts from our online store or e-books, all Faerie related of course.
Did you know that many of the most famous and popular tales began as dark, cautionary tales? Our Patreon exclusive videos will lean toward the darker side of Folk and Faerie tales, this allows us to explore some of the original tales which have been watered-down over time to be kid-friendly. Our latest Patreon video is a great example of this.
I wonder… if you happened upon a house made of gingerbread and cakes, adorned in candies, chocolate and sweet pastries, what would you eat first?
Did you know the story of Hansel and Gretel, published by Brothers Grimm in 1812, was inspired by a great famine that struck Europe in 1314? This was a ghastly time. A time when parents abandoned their children and, it is said, in some cases ate them. This very dark tale certainly doesn’t shy away from the darker elements of human suffering and features child abandonment attempted cannibalism, enslavement, and murder. But… it is also the tale of wits, determination, love, loyalty and two indomitable children: Hansel and Gretel.
It’s a fantastic video, I really think you’ll enjoy it and its live today for Patreon subscribers. Please visit my Patreon page and take a look around. A Special thank you to our Patrons for this episode;
April Proctor, Brett Manning, Tsu, Janice Silva, and Beth Bloomer.
